A study is made of the 60-year variations in the earth's geomagnetic field with attention to the mechanism for such variations. It is suggested that localized perturbations occurring near the boundary of the core and the mantle, and then traveling to the surface, may be the source of the variations. Various kinematic models of localized perturbations are reviewed, and a time-space map of the magnetic field on the earth's surface is numerically derived with reference to the models.
