EVN polarization images at 5 GHz of the Compact Steep-Spectrum (CSS) radio quasar 3C 286 are presented. The brightest region of this source is strongly polarized with the magnetic field dominated by the component perpendicular to the source axis. The electric vector orientation follows the stream of the emitting plasma along most of the structure revealed by the EVN data. The paper considers two possible interpretations for the observational data on this source: core-jet or lobe with hotspots. The EVN polarization results favour a scenario where the main body of radio emission is indeed a lobe with a double hot-spot.
