Several new and diverse areas of VLBI research were hightlighted, in particular, spectral-line absorption measurements directly probing the distribution of gas surrounding active galactic nuclei, observations of maser emission in star-forming regions, wide-field imaging of expanding supernova remnants in the nearby starburst galaxy M82, the first high resolution observations of the faint mJy and μJy radio source populations, multi-epoch investigations of compact symmetric objects and the presentation of various evolutionary scenarios, and ground-breaking, high-resolution observations made by the Japanese-led Space VLBI mission, VSOP, co-observing with the EVN and other sensitive ground arrays.
