HST Planetary Camera narrow-band images of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 3 were obtained as part of the FOS GTO program. The nucleus of the galaxy is completely resolved in all of the filters used --- F502N, F547M, F664N. Emission-line images ([O III] lambda 4959, and Hα +[N II]) reveal a prominent S-shaped structure extending through a series of bright knots up to ~ 1'' (0.25 kpc for Hdeg = 75 km s(-1) Mpc(-1) ) on both sides of the nucleus. The nucleus itself, if determined as the center of the elliptical isophotes fitted to the continuum image, is found to be between the two innermost emission-line knots, approximately 0.3" (78 pc) from each of them. Within the uncertainties of the astrometry the optical structure is well associated with features in the latest subarcsecond radio map (Miley et al. 1992, private communication), however the detailed association in not as strong as that found in NGC 1068. The continuum image, on the other hand, is well approximated by a de Vaucouleurs profile at larger distances (>0.5"--1.0") and shows a bar-like elongation aligned with the inner part of the S-shaped jet. This bar is especially noticeable when an elliptical model is subtracted from the original image. We will discuss several different possibilities for the origin of this extra light. This work is supported by NASA-GSFC grant NAG 5-1630.
