Instrumentation: Spectrographes
Scientific paper
The instrument TIGER is the first prototype of an integral field spectrograph using a microlenses array to perform bidimensional high spatial resolution spectrographic observations. It has been in operation at CFHT for a few years and has been successfully used on a large variety of astrophysical objects, ranging from the planet Mars to distant radio-galaxies and quasars. We discuss the fundamentals of the TIGER design and show that it is superior to long-slit spectrography for high spatial resolution purposes. The main characteristics of the instrument are given and some of the astrophysical results are briefly reviewed.
