Magnetic reconnection plays a critical role in the structure of the magnetopause and the ability of the solar wind plasma to enter into the magnetosphere. During a typical spacecraft encounter with the dayside magnetopause, multiple magnetopause encounters occur. An unresolved question is whether these encounters are due to the entire magnetopause moving, or whether the magnetopause is rippled by the presence of flux transfer events. 3D global multi-fluid simulations are used to investigate the structure of the magnetopause relative to THEMIS observations made during a magnetopause encounter that occurred on June 19, 2007. During the encounter the IMF was dominated by a period of southward IMF with non-zero components of Bx and By. It is shown that the model is able to account for several of the magnetopause encounters, with the results indicating that the multiple encounters are due to a rippled magnetopause and not just the magnetopause moving back and forward. We determine the position of reconnection relative to the position of THEMIS and show that flux ropes grow as they move along the surface of the magnetopause indicating that reconnection is not static; but highly variable with small changes in solar wind conditions having a large effect on the magnetopause.
