The optical light curve of the OVV quasar 3C 345 is analyzed. It is shown that it is generated by a nonlinear and nonstationary stochastic process. The observed characteristics of the 3C 345 variability, such as the varying power spectrum and the strong luminosity bursts, are easily accounted for in this mathematical framework. Conventional algorithms suitable for linear analysis (power spectrum, structure function, covariance function, etc.) are not useful in this case and different approaches have to be devised. The physics acting in the central regions of QSOs are probably nonlinear and dominated by a quantity subject to random variations.
