After approximately 10 years of design and constructional work, a large telescope has now been completed by a German company. It is intended to employ the instrument in studies to be conducted at the German-Spanish Astronomical Center on the Calar Alto in Southern Spain. The 3.5-m telescope will be a valuable addition to the currently available instruments of the Center, which include a 1.2-m and a 2.2-m telescope. It is pointed out that the 3.5-m telescope is at the moment the most recent instrument of a number of large telescopes which were built in a number of countries during the last decade. The telescope utilizes, therefore, technological features of the most recent origin to implement classical basic concepts. It is expected that the instrument will be first used in astronomical observations at the end of 1983.
