Measurements of 224Ra off the coasts of South Carolina and Georgia reveal that significant activities occur up to 70 km offshore. Although some of this activity may be transported from estuarine, salt marsh and nearshore source regions, high near-bottom activities in stratified waters suggest that additional 224Ra is being supplied by the decay of 228Th in mid-shelf sediments. This 228Th is probably derived from the decay of 228Ra in the water column. 224Ra is potentially a powerfull tracer of water mixing on the Shelf; however, a good understanding of its input functions is required before this potential may be realized.
