A novel configuration and support concept are proposed for a next-generation 10-m aperture telescope capable of satisfying 250-A accuracy requirements with a merely 5-cm thickness mirror. The design employs 32 mirror elements and uses a compact altazimuth mount; together, these substantially reduce the cost of fabrication and installation. Special advantages are anticipated for this configuration's bearing of the effects of wind and temperature loads; extensive use has been made of computer control-enhanced load-compensating design features. The available foci for the design are prime, Cassegrain, Nasmyth, and coude.
