IERS routinely provides homogeneous celestial and terrestrial references and Earth orientation parameters with an accuracy of a few tenths of a milliarsecond (about 1 cm at the surface of the Earth). The global observing activity involves measurements from the following systems: Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR), Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR), Global Positioning System (GPS) and Doppler Orbitography and Radiolocation integrated by Satellite (DORIS). A total of 290 global network sites and their velocities are involved in the ITRF96 solution. The analyses performed by about 25 groups from 10 countries provide the daily monitoring of the Earth orientation parameters as well as the maintenance of the celestial (ICRF) and terrestrial (ITRF) reference frames. In addition, IERS has successfully developed the monitoring of the Atmospheric Angular Momentum (AAM) and has initiated the distribution of data for monitoring global geophysical fluids.
