The first list of revised MK spectral types for 521 standard stars was published in 1983 (Keenan, Bulletin C.D.S., No. 24, 19). Since then it has been found possible to simplify the notation for weak-line stars by eliminating the CN index and using only a negative Fe index to characterize their spectra (Keenan, 1985). The justification for this step is found in the published analyses, which show a good correlation between the atmospheric abundances of CN and of the iron-peak elements. For the present edition of the catalogue the types of all of the weak-line stars have accordingly been revised.
