Very high energy (VHE) γ-ray astronomy above ~ 20 GeV is only possible with ground based Cherenkov detectors, at least for the foreseeable future. With a single Cherenkov telescope one can detect air showers over a collection area of typically 30000 m2, which provides the high rate capability of the technique. We present here the 17 m diameter MAGIC air Cherenkov imaging telescope project, which, depending on the type of the applied light detector, will provide measurements above a low energy threshold of 15-40 GeV and allow to study γ-ray sources in the not yet investigated 20-300 GeV energy range.
