The concentration of 10Be in Pacific Ocean surface water has been measured by nuclear accelerator spectrometry to be ~740 atoms/cm3. This value, which is much less than the 10Be concentration in precipitation, suggests that particle scavenging of Be in the surface layer is important. The present work demonstrates the feasibility of making detailed horizontal and vertical distribution measurements of 10Be in the oceans, using the accelerator technique.
