Using accelerator spectrometry, the concentration of 10Be has been measured in surface, intermediate and near-bottom water at the same location in the Mozambique Basin. Assuming the two deep-water results are representative of the oceans, the mean oceanic residence time of 10Be is 630 years. This represents an upper limit on the effective transport time for most of the 10Be to the ocean floor.
