We review the STEPS program, presenting results and looking forward to future prospects for ground-based astrometry. With STEPS we have discovered companions to several of the presumed single M-stars in our 30 star sample. All the companions were confirmed with subsequent imaging or astrometry. The smallest mass companion thus far is the brown dwarf GJ 802b with a mass of 60 MJ. Other possible smaller mass companions will be discussed. An improved ground-based program will feature high-dynamic range capability and, perhaps, venture into the infrared band. A moderate cost space mission can be based upon these principles
