A novel 1-D joint inversion algorithm for interpreting multicomponent transient electromagnetic (TEM) data was developed to invert individual data sets using independent smooth models. The model consistency is controlled by additional entries in the regularization matrix in a smooth model inversion. Compared with the traditional joint inversion approach, the new algorithm is far less likely to produce spurious model features, due to multidimensional distortions of the data. The new inversion scheme was successfully applied to field data sets recorded in Northern Israel.
