The 1.3-mm continuum emission from the circumstellar envelopes of late-type stars are surveyed using both the IRAM 30-m (MRT) and SEST 15-m telescopes. Thirty-three late-type stars were detected out of a possible total of 45. Evidence for variability in several sources was found. Several of the stronger sources were checked to determine whether their emission was extended relative to the 30-m (11-arcsec) beam, and it was found that they are mostly point-like. The majority of the detected objects are argued to be in the asymptotic-giant-branch (AGB) stage of their evolution. Fourteen are supergiants and nine or ten are in a post-AGB phase. Fourteen optically visible Mira's and semiregular variables were detected, and it is suggested from a comparison with near-infrared measurements that emission is being observed from a photosphere with effective temperatures of 2000-3000 K.
