Measurements of ion fluxes in the plasma of the Martian magnetic field obtained by charged particle spectrometers on the Mars 2 and 3 probes are used to demonstrate the existence of a bow shock in the solar wind-Mars interaction region. The satellite orbits and instrumentation are described, and data indicating a bow shock are presented. The parameters of the bow shock are calculated, and observations are made regarding the origin of the Martian magnetic field.
