Experimental data on daily variations in the geomagnetic field are analyzed for evidence of counterflowing electrojets. In particular, the disappearance of the q type of Es layer (Es-q) and the appearance of blanketing-type Es (Es-b) are investigated. Various findings are reported; among them is the suggestion that the source of the upper (107 km) eastward current is the Sq dynamo current system, and that the lower (100 km) westward current is associated with the lunar current system or due to the electric fields generated by the interaction of the solar wind with the magnetosphere or by various polar substorm processes.
