The possibility is considered that tiny brightenings observed near magnetic neutral lines during the initial phase of a flare in the lower chromosphere or upper photosphere may be the source of flare energy. The development of bright spots and patches in the region of the August 2, 1972, flare is described as observed in 3835-A filtergrams. The behavior of a particular bright spot is examined in detail, and it is suggested that mass ejection from a tiny point in the lower flare layers is the basic mechanism of a flare. Possible relationships between this mechanism and other flare-associated phenomena are discussed.
