We propose a deep TOO observation of a bright X-ray afterglow of a gamma-ray burst using the Chandra LETG/ACIS-S. The trigger will be based primarily on the X-ray flux, which will be monitored with the X-ray Telescope on board the Swift observatory. An additional constraint on the line-of-sight Galactic column density will be imposed as well to provide the highest statistical-quality grating spectrum of a GRB X-ray afterglow. These criteria, which is based on our detailed study of the currently-available datasets in the archive, maximizes the chances of detecting and identifying discrete X-ray features from the circumburst environment, which will provide us with important clues about the nature of the progenitor.
