Simultaneous observations of the polarization of the H-alpha and D3 lines emitted by solar prominences are presented. Measurements of 60 prominences were made between May and August 1979 with a monochromatic filter allowing switching between H-alpha and D3 lines at the same temperature by the changing of a multilayer interference prefilter. The degree of polarization of the D3 line is found not to depend on line intensity, while for H-alpha the degree of polarization decreases sharply when the line intensity exceeds that corresponding to an optical thickness of 1. The angular deviation of the polarization is not observed to depend strongly on H-alpha line intensity. Results thus demonstrate the depolarizing role of multiple scattering in optically thick prominences and indicate that magnetic depolarizations may only be measured in moderately bright regions where the optical depth of H-alpha is less than 1 and D3 is not too faint. It is pointed out that simultaneous observations of D3 and the H3 10, 830 A and the H beta line may also be useful for the investigation of prominence magnetic fields through the Hanle effect.
