A mechanism for magnetospheric substorms is proposed. It is suggested that the MHD waves propagate across the magnetopause from the magnetosheath into the magnetotail, and are then dissipated in the plasma sheet, heating the plasma and causing particle acceleration. The heated plasma and the accelerated particles in the plasma sheet are injected into the inner magnetosphere, and this may explain the process of ring current formation and the auroral substorm.
