During moderately disturbed periods, the AE and Dst indices have a simple linear relationship. However, it is shown that their relationship is considerably different during geomagnetic storms. As the absolute value of Dst index grows above 50 gamma, the AE index levels off and tends to decrease. This finding may have interesting implications in understanding the formation of the ring current belt.
