Observations of cometary dust are reviewed, both for Earthbound measurements and for space measurements. The structure of cometary dust is of low density, such as the loosely conglomerated fluffy particles collected in the atmosphere by Brownlee. Reported IR measurements show silicates to be the main constituent of cometary dust. From simulation experiments and theoretical considerations, more primitive material than previously assumed in the form of carbonaceous C 1 chondrites should be expected. The submicron sized grains may be at least partly of presolar or interstellar origin. The strongest criteria are isotopic deviations from the solar system values, for example for C12/C13 and/or Li7/Li6.
