X-ray synchrotron study of iron heated between 1400 to 2200 K over a pressure range of 40 to 60 gigapascals confirms previous reports of the transformation of the hexagonal closest packed (HCP) phase of iron (ɛ) to the double HCP Iron (β). The study extends the stability range of the new phase β to the highest pressure range yet achieved for such transformation.
