The Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft may well prove to be the most important Mars mission flown to date. It may not be going too far to state that the new picture of Mars presented by the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter mapping will trigger off something of a revolution in the understanding of the structure and evolutionary history of Mars, and also of the terrestrial planets in general.
