The Forbush decrease (FD) in cosmic-ray activity is characterized by analyzing published neutron-monitor measurements from the Alert, McMurdo, and South Pole stations. The data are presented in extensive graphs and discussed in detail. It is shown that many FD events exhibit pitlike time profiles in certain isolated regions; in these periods (median duration 8 h), the cosmic rays are trapped in a strong undisturbed uniform magnetic field perpendicular to the solar wind, and the ratio of magnetic to thermal energy is large. It is proposed that the trapping occurs in a large horseshoe-shaped magnetic-force tube with its ends connected near the sun and a near-earth cross section of radial dimension 0.1 AU and transverse dimension 1.1 AU.
