In this study, data from the Goose Bay radar were used to obtain high-spatial-resolution two-dimensional maps of the effects of gravity waves on the high-latitude F region. These maps were used to identify medium-scale waves (MSWs) in the high-latitude ionosphere, to determine their modes of propagation, and to locate the gravity wave sources for their excitation. It was found that the MSWs have a gravity-wave source near the ionospheric convection reversal boundary and generally within the eastward ionospheric electrojet. It is suggested that these gravity waves contribute to a steady transfer of energy from the magnetosphere to the thermosphere.
