High resolution X-ray spectra from solar and stellar coronae provide rich diagnostics for the physical conditions in the plasma, such as temperatures, densities, and elemental composition. They can also provide keys to physical processes, indicating non-equilibrium ionization or opacity. Of course, the information gained from a spectrum is only as good as the atomic structure models and atomic rate coefficients that are used. I will discuss collisional-radiative modeling in the context of recent discoveries and problems in coronal physics.
