THE last British ice sheet probably reached its greatest extent
17,000-18,000 radiocarbon yr ago, when it covered much of the British
Isles. We suggest here that this ice mass had disappeared 5,000 yr
later. Significant new evidence comes from Loch Etteridge in the heart
of the Grampian Highlands of Scotland (Fig. 1).
