The scanning narrow beam riometer at Syowa station, Antarctica detects north-south and east-west motion of auroral absorptions, with a time resolution of 10 s and spatial resolution of 10 km at the ionospheric height. It is shown that elongated absorptions with a width of 30-60 km drifted at speeds ranging from 60-700 m/s, based on 13 absorption events selected from the Sundial-86 campaign (September 22-October 4, 1986) data. The absorption tends to drift eastward in the morning sector and westward in the afternoon sector. Furthermore, the drift direction is poleward around 10 MlT and equatorward in the premidnight sector. This local time dependence of the drift direction essentially coincides with drift of relatively small scale (250 km) absorption derived by Hargreaves (1970), based on observations using oblique antenna with an effective spacing of 250 km. It is concluded that the drift of small scale absorption is predominantly caused by the E x B drift rather than by the curvature and gradient B drifts.
