The four 8 m telescopes at the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Paranal have come together to work as a single telescope at last - 10 years after two beams were first combined in the VLT interferometer using the new instrument PIONIER.
An astronomer who works on instrumentation for the Keck Telescope is applying the same techniques to measure and assess malignant melanomas - partly as a result of the frequent skin cancer checks he himself undergoes.
