Research drilling in the deep ocean is a fundamental element of data collection in solid-Earth geophysics, climate and Earth-system science as a whole. Now budget cuts mean that the principal vessel of the international Integrated Ocean Drilling Program, the JOIDES Resolution, must delay planned activities in 2012, and will operate for only six months of that year.
As part of its Year of the Solar System, NASA has prepared a gallery of large high-resolution images that can be downloaded and used in exhibitions worldwide.
