The source of the elementary flare bursts which make up the individual spikes observed in relatively short-lived flare-associated solar hard X-ray bursts is considered. An average model of the high-energy component of a solar flare based on the interpretation of Skylab and Intercosmos soft X-ray observations is presented, noting the presence of a small dense core or kernel of size comparable to that of the observed H alpha kernel and situated over the neutral line and within the filament that bridges the neutral line, and the presence of arcades of loops surrounding the kernel. Flare development in these loops of coronal plasma is discussed, and the identification of individual elementary flare bursts with the successive excitation of the kernels of individual loops in a loop complex is suggested. The desirability of a simultaneous observation of the spatial structure and time variation of hard X-ray burst sources during the Solar Maximum Mission is also pointed out.
