A summary of the basic features of gravitationally driven convection is presented. Phase changes in a self-gravitating sphere of molten binary alloy representing a planetary core upon cooling over geological time are considered, noting that the material diffusion coefficient between two phases formed from the binary melt is such smaller than the thermal diffusion coefficient; this accounts for the inherent efficiency of the gravitationally driven dynamo. An expression for the power available to drive a hydromagnetic dynamo is given, and thermal consequences of gravitationally driven convection are presented.
