Multipoint measurements from Cluster, Geotail, Polar, and ground magnetometer stations (SAMNET, IMAGE) are presented, covering a distance up to 16 Re in the magnetotail. We will demonstrate a new association of two magnetic structures: (a) nightside FTE and (b) Pi2 pulsations. The temporal evolution of a series of FTE pulses in the magnetotail, propagating at a speed of 600-800 km/s towards Earth, is consistent with the general description of typical Pi2 pulsations. Furthermore, the ground observations show time-delayed identical magnetic field oscillations at substorm onset which are identified as substorm-related Pi2 pulsations. These observations relate for the first time these two magnetospheric phenomena. We will discuss the properties of the nightside FTE and give a scenario of how the FTE pulses were generated and how they caused the ground Pi2s.
