Patches or narrow arcs of auroral luminosity detached from the main auroral oval are occasionally observed on Earth's night side during large magnetic storms. Such `nightside detached auroras' (NDAs) occur at 45-50 degrees magnetic latitude and have been shown to be produced by the precipitation of ring current protons [Zhang et al., J. Geophys. Res., 110, A002206, 2005]. With an imaging cadence of two minutes, the Far Ultraviolet Imager on the IMAGE spacecraft makes it possible to resolve the temporal behavior of NDAs and to relate variations in their intensity and morphology to changing conditions in the solar wind and inner magnetosphere. IMAGE FUV observations made during the `superstorm' of November 9-10, 2004 suggest that NDAs respond to changes in both solar wind dynamic pressure and IMF orientation, with the latter being the dominant factor.
