Magnetic Fields: Particle Propagation

Scientific paper

The drift Hamiltonian is derived in its general form for the guiding center of a charged particle in the relevant curvilinear coordinates formed by the Euler potentials α and β and a complementary parameter s. The specific form of the drift Hamiltonian is shown to change in a dipole magnetic field depending on the choice of the third parameter. The geometric shape of the adiabatic zone in the dipole where the drift approximation is valid is found from the approximation conditions. The limiting case when the drift approximation does not apply to particles with zero equatorial pitch angles is considered. Mirroring latitudes are determined for such particles.
