Recently, it has been suggested that the solar wind dynamic pressure enhances the coupling efficiency between the solar wind and the magnetosphere. One of the working hypotheses, at the moment, is that the solar wind pressure enhances the nightside reconnection during both southward and northward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) orientations. Here, we first investigate the different definitions one can use in determining the coupling efficiency. For the coupling efficiency, we consider the ratios between the polar cap potential and the available magnetospheric potential, as well as the ionospheric reconnection electric field and the interplanetary electric field (IEF). We investigate these ratios both as a response to a dynamic pressure impulse and as a function of instantaneous dynamic pressure. For ionospheric potential and reconnection electric field, we use data from the SuperDARN radars and the PC index from Thule. The solar wind speed and pressure are determined by the ACE spacecraft SWEPAM instrument, while the IEF requires also measurements from the magnetic field experiment (MAG) onboard ACE. We also investigate the coupling efficiency during different IMF orientations.
