It is known that dispersive Alfvén waves can contribute to the acceleration and gravitational escape of ionospheric ions, but understanding the specific acceleration process requires knowledge of the perpendicular wavenumber of the waves. Recent advances in thermal plasma analyzer technology have given rise to the capability of directly measuring differences in E-cross-B and ion drifts at the metre-per-second level with sampling rates that cover the oxygen ion cyclotron frequency in the topside ionosphere. We describe a technique for estimating the Alfvén perdendicular wavenumber from small differences in these drifts due to Doppler-shifted polarization drift.
