Field-Aligned Currents (FACs), also called Birkeland currents, provide the linkage between the solar wind, magnetosphere system, and the ionosphere. The distribution and variability of FACs determine ionospheric Joule heating rate, and affect the density and composition of the neutral atmosphere. The dependence of FACs on solar wind conditions and geomagnetic activities can help us to understand the connections and influences among solar wind and various magnetosphere/ionosphere systems. Recently launched and successfully finished NASA Space Technology 5 (ST5) mission is dedicated to study FACs besides its technology demonstration objectives. This mission returned more than three month's of high quality magnetic field data from three satellites with separations in space of ~50 - 4000 km and in time of ~5 s - 10 min. This allows unprecedented resolutions of FACs with much better characterization of their properties, including their motion, thickness, and strength. In this study, we conduct a statistical study of FAC properties (including magnitude, motion, and position) dependence on solar wind and geomagnetic activities using ST5 and Wind spacecraft observations, as well as geomagnetic Dst and Kp indices. Special attention will be given to the global dependence of FACs during violent solar wind conditions and large geomagnetic activities.
