Solar Polar Imager's coronagraphic observations from vantage points well out of the ecliptic plane provide a panoramic view of the solar corona, coronal mass ejections and the inner heliosphere, allowing the longitudinal structure of such features to be readily assessed. Once in final circular orbit at 0.5 AU and 75 degree inclination, SPI's three orbits per year will provide coverage of long term solar wind and coronal variations from equatorial to high latitudes. The 0.5 AU vantage point will allow us to assess solar energetic particle (SEP) distributions closer to the Sun, clarifying the source and propagation effects for SEPs. Additionally, the tracing of high latitude solar features to their in-situ counterparts will be enabled with stereo observations (either actual or time delay). In-situ observations of the latitudinal properties of the solar wind ion distributions at 0.5 AU will further our understanding of the solar wind kinetics. In this poster, we present results from the Vision Mission Study of a Solar Polar Imager mission. The SPI mission uses solar sail propulsion to place a Sun- pointed spacecraft into a high inclination 0.5 AU circular orbit around the Sun. Details of the scientific objectives (with stress on the solar wind), instrument suite, observations and mission design will be presented.
