Recent spacecraft missions allow detailed studies of the boundaries between the solar wind and the magnetosphere. Diffusion can be efficient across specific regions of the boundaries, but is not likely to contribute much to the overall solar wind-magnetosphere coupling. Rather, the main process allowing entry of energy into the magnetosphere seems to be a magnetic reconnection process at the magnetopause. Magnetic reconnection leads to energy conversion in large volumes in space, but is initiated in small diffusion regions. However, much can be learned about reconnection by studying the narrow separatrix regions extending far away from the diffusion regions. We report on multi- and also some single-spacecraft results concerning reconnection. Major recent results including mapping of the associated fine-structure down to the electron scale, understanding of the electric field generation at small scales, understanding of the associated particle acceleration at the boundary, speculation of associated acceleration regions extending deep into the auroral region, and the use of whistler waves just inside the magnetopause as tracers of narrow separatrix-like layers. We emphasis the importance of micro-physics for large-scale physics.
