We present first results of 2-dimensional MHD-simulations taking into
account explicitly the near-Earth dipole dominated region of the Earth's
magnetotail. The results indicate that the onset of reconnection in the
near-Earth tail depends significantly stronger on the chosen model for
the resistivity than in the tail outside 15 - 20R_E.
