We present near-infrared color-magnitude diagrams and luminosity functions of six fields within and in the vicinity of M31's notable 10 kpc ring of star formation, obtained with Gemini North and NIRI using the ALTAIR adaptive optics system. Through fits of model stellar populations to the M_K luminosity functions, we derive the star formation and metal-enrichment histories of the fields. The fits reveal evidence for a burst of star formation associated with the ring, with the age and metallicity of the burst dependent on location. We discuss the possibilities for the origin of the ring, including whether an interaction with M32 could be responsible for its formation.
