Six FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC satellites were launched into a low earth orbit at around 500 km at 0140 UTC on 15 April 2006. Each satellite will be placed into six different orbits with 24o separation in longitude at around 800 km and covers the entire global ionosphere, providing over 2,500 sounding data per day. Since the satellite constellation observes the ionosphere between 90 and 800 km, it provides the important information of the global ionosphere structure, especially in the topside ionosphere, where there are only small number of observations from other measurements. In this paper, we focus on the FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC topside ionosphere observation to investigate the formation of the topside layer. Furthermore, we compare the FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC ionospheric electron density profiles with ground-based observations. By using the globally distributed electron density vertical profiles from June to November 2006, the latitudinal distribution of the occurrence of the topside layer will be discussed.
