This talk reviews the status of the ATLAS experiment as it prepares for data-taking at the Large Hadron Collider. The current work on installing the detector systems is discussed. Prospects for early discoveries of beyond the Standard Model physics are also considered, focussing on potential signatures for supersymmetric particle production, and for the presence of extra space dimensions.
