Atomic oxygen, the primary product of O2 photolysis, is the dominant constituent of the earth's upper thermosphere because there is no fast bimolecular reaction path to recombine O atoms above the mesopause. Recombination occurs in the mesopause region by catalytic reactions involving odd hydrogen, with the OH radical as the principal catalyst. . Because atomic oxygen is in chemical equilibrium only below 80 km, it is an important chemical tracer of transport above this altitude. Remote sensing of airglow emissions whose excitation mechanisms involve atomic oxygen can provide measurements of the atomic oxygen concentration at this important region. In this paper, we will present the result of our continuous study on the global atomic oxygen distribution between 85 and 110 km and its seasonal and solar cycle variabilities based on mesospheric airglow observations taken by TIDI/TIMED (2002 to present) and HRDI/UARS (1994 to 2005).
